School Programs
School recycling programs are a huge part of the recycling success of the Horry County Solid Waste Authority. These programs help to fulfill the mission of protecting tomorrow's environment today.
School programs include Cafeteria Cardboard Recycling, Classroom Paper Recycling, as well as the various recycling contests and field trips available.

Recycling Liaison
Every school in Horry County has a Recycling Liaison that works with the Horry County Solid Waste Authority (SWA) to ensure a successful recycling program. The Recycling Liaison acts as the primary contact between the school and the SWA. They help to monitor and promote the school's recycling programs, contests and projects.
To find out your school's Recycling Liaison, please call (843) 347-1651 or email education@solidwasteauthority.org.

Environmental Awards Banquet
Every year, the Horry County Solid Waste Authority honors teachers and educators that have supported its mission in "Protecting Tomorrow's Environment Today" with an Environmental Awards Banquet.

Thelma Jean "T.J." Robertson of Kingston Elementary received the Liaison of the Year award for her efforts in inspiring students to recycle.
Horry County schools and educators have the opportunity to be selected for various honors, such as the Gold Star School Award, the Liaison of the Year Award, the Recycling Superstar Award and the top honor of the Environmental Eagle Award.
The winners are selected by the Horry County Solid Waste Authority based on their outstanding efforts in support of the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle as well as helping to teach our youth about the environment.
The 14th Annual Environmental Awards Banquet was held September 18, 2007 and Richard Chesley of SC DHEC was the guest speaker. The 2007 theme "Fall Into Recycling" encourages all educators to be literally fall into the practices of recycling all year.

Cafeteria Recycling Program

Cardboard recycling
container for the school
cafeteria program.
When preparing meals, school cafeterias produce a lot of waste and recyclables. In order to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in our landfill, the Solid Waste Authority provides teal-color dumpsters for the collection of cardboard, steel cans and plastic jugs.
Recycling Procedure
Cardboard boxes must be emptied and flattened before placed in the Cafeteria Recycling Container. Cans and jugs (large-size only) must be rinsed and placed in clear plastic bags before being placed in the container.
Not for Bottles or Cans
Please do not utilize the Cafeteria Recycling Container for recycling individual plastic drink bottles or aluminum cans. Plastic bags are easily broken and smaller recyclables can easily get crushed and lost between cardboard. If a cardboard recycling processor finds a crushed soda bottle within the layers of a cardboard load, they will reject the entire load and it may not get recycled! Suggestion: Bring those recyclables to the nearest Recycling Convenience Center.
Classroom Paper Recycling Program
Every classroom in Horry County has the opportunity and should be recycling paper through the Solid Waste Authority's comprehensive Classroom Paper Recycling Program.
Why Recycle Paper?
We throw away more paper than anything else. In fact, about 40 percent of our trash is paper and it takes up the most space in our landfill. Paper is the easiest recycled and classroom paper is also the highest quality type of paper. Recycled paper makes a variety of products including computer paper, paper towels, toilet paper, puzzle boards and more!

The Newspaper Recycling Program is offered at middle and high schools and the school that recycles the best will win the annual newspaper recycling contest and individual recycled-content prizes for every student in the school. These schools will have "black" roll carts for newspaper, which will be collected weekly by the Horry County Solid Waste Authority. We encourage the use of a decorated cardboard box or crate to collect newspaper in the classrooms.
