America Recycles Day (ARD)

What is America Recycles Day?

America Recycles Day is a national celebration held annually on November 15 to remind us that recycling is working and the important role each of us plays in keeping it working. The theme is "for the future... Buy Recycled Today!" The goal is simple: to increase the purchase of recycled content products, because you're not really recycling unless you are buying recycled products.

Why is "Buying Recycled" important?

It's simple - in order for materials collected through recycling programs to have value or be used in manufacturing products, there needs to be damand for those products. You create that demand by purchasing products made and/or packaged with recycled paper, steel, aluminum, glass and plastic.

How To Buy Recycled...
It's easier than you think. If we use our buying power wisely, we can make the world a healthier place. Each time you go to the grocery store, you're likely to buy products in packages made of recovered materials. Almost all cereal, cracker and cake mix boxes are made from 100% recycled paperboard. Paper towels and tissues may be made entirely or partially of recycled materials. Steel cans, glass bottles and aluminum cans also contain high percentages of recovered materials. In fact, aluminum cans may be back on the store shelf within six weeks of being recycled.

At the office supply store there are choices to make. Whether you're looking for copier paper, printer paper, fine writing paper, envelopes or toner cartridges, there are likely to be products made partially or entirely of recovered materials. So, be sure to read the labels. Look for the highest percentage of recycled content you can find.

Thanks to you, recycling is working. The proof is in the paper, plastic, steel, aluminum and glass that you've been recycling. It's being made into all sorts of everyday products and packages that are available on the market right now. There's just one thing left for you to do: Buy Them.

That's the cycle in recycling: you sort recycled materials, your city or town collects them and manufacturers buy them to make into new products. Anyone currently involved with recycling programs, purchasing or manufacturing has probably noticed the increasing attention to "buying recycled."
