Horry County Solid Waste Authority present annual environmental awards

July 10, 2018 – Conway, SC ---- Educators and staff from Horry County Schools were recently honored during the Horry County Solid Waste Authority’s 25th Annual Environmental Awards Banquet held on July 10, 2018 in Conway.

Certificate of E3 (Excellent Environmental Efforts) was given to Pee Dee Elementary and River Oaks Elementary for their continued efforts in recycling and waste reduction.

The Green Spark Award was awarded to Ocean Bay Elementary for their gardening program which utilizes organic waste from the cafeteria.  Outdoor learning experiences through gardening occurred with not only students, but the community as well.

Forestbrook Middle and Waterway Elementary were presented the Gold Star Award for their continued efforts in their school recycling programs during the 2017-2018 school year. This would include all recycling programs offered by the Horry County Solid Waste Authority.

Kerry Rabon of Ocean Bay Elementary School and Shannon Angelo of River Oaks Elementary were both recognized with the Recycling Super Star of the Year Award for their dedication and leadership in conserving the environment at school and in the community.

Thelma Jean Robertson (Coach T) of Kingston Elementary was named the 2017-2018 Recycling Liaison of the Year for her leadership and diligence in promoting recycling and environmental awareness in her school. Coach T is the Physical Education Instructor and is a huge help to the SWA by encouraging staff, students, and community to be more environmentally aware.

 

 

Caught Green Handed! Recycler Awarded by the Horry County Solid Waste Authority​

Conway, SC – The Horry County Solid Waste Authority recently recognized Little River area resident David Stanley as the “Caught Green Handed” recipient for the month of May.
“The ‘Caught Green Handed’ recognition is presented monthly to a Horry County resident caught in the act of recycling” stated Esther Murphy, Director of Recycling and Corporate Affairs for the Solid Waste Authority. “It’s the Solid Waste Authority’s way of recognizing and thanking citizens who have made the effort to recycle. Through their recycling efforts, natural resources are saved and the amount of waste being landfilled is reduced.” Mr. Stanley, a regular recycler at the Brooksville Recycling Center, was surprised and honored to receive this recognition.

Conway, SC – The Horry County Solid Waste Authority recently recognized Green Sea area resident Lois Johnson as the “Caught Green Handed” recipient for the month of April.

“The ‘Caught Green Handed’ recognition is presented monthly to a Horry County resident caught in the act of recycling” stated Esther Murphy, Director of Recycling and Corporate Affairs for the Solid Waste Authority. “It’s the Solid Waste Authority’s way of recognizing and thanking citizens who have made the effort to recycle. Through their recycling efforts, natural resources are saved and the amount of waste being landfilled is reduced.” Ms. Johnson, a regular recycler at the Mount Olive Recycling Center, was surprised and honored to receive this recognition.

“The ‘Caught Green Handed’ recognition is presented monthly to a Horry County resident caught in the act of recycling” stated Esther Murphy, Director of Recycling and Corporate Affairs for the Solid Waste Authority.  “It’s the Solid Waste Authority’s way of recognizing and thanking citizens who have made the effort to recycle.  Through their recycling efforts, natural resources are saved and the amount of waste being landfilled is reduced.”  Mr. Brady, a regular recycler at the Carolina Forest Recycling Center, was surprised and honored to receive this recognition.

"POP Art"

CONWAY, SC ---- Black Water Middle School students know how to turn trash into treasure.  The school submitted an entry to the Horry County Solid Waste Authority’s annual POP (Protect Our Planet) Art Recycling Contest. Sixth grader Christopher Emery created a Christmas Tree of art with discarded keys, which was selected as the grand prize winner in the Horry County Solid Waste Authority’s POP Art Contest in recognition of America Recycles Day. 

As grand prizewinner, Christopher received an electronic reading device, a plaque and a prize pack of recycled-content items including school supplies.

This was the thirteenth year the Horry County Solid Waste Authority offered the POP Art Contest.  The contest is designed to promote environmental awareness and highlight the creative talents of students. The contest was open to all middle school students in Horry County.

The students were required to create a work of art using at least 70% of a specified material chosen by the Solid Waste Authority.  This year’s material was discarded keys.
