> Bag Bags! Americans dump more than 21 million plastic grocery bags into landfills every year. Recycle those bags at Wal-Mart and some local grocery store chains or reuse a cotton tote bag. Bi-Lo grocery stores give shoppers a 5-cent per bag credit for each reusable bag when they check out each shopping trip.

SCDHEC’s Education Programs

Champions of the Environment is building up its list of winners, so don’t miss a chance to earn $500 for your environmental project. Fill out an application and tell us how your students are working to improve or protect the environment. We judge the applications received each month and choose a Champion to reward with cash and a television commercial. For an application, go to www.scdhec.gov/champions

Action For A Cleaner Tomorrow ("Action") is a K-12 curriculum that is correlated to South Carolina state standards. If you have a group of 30 or more DHEC can coordinate a training session so the teachers can best utilize this tool.

Action in the Classroom talks ’trash’ and recycling with students in the 5th grade. Students are taught about the basics of what happens when you throw something away and the 3Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle.

Green Driver classes for the drivers education course is available for high schools. These lessons presented by DHEC help the young drivers understand how the automobiles effect the environment. Students learn the importance of used oil recycling, related air, water and energy issues regarding the proper maintenance of their vehicles, litter prevention and safety through a video.

For these programs call SC DHEC’s hot line: 1-800-768-7348 or check the website: www.scdhec.gov/recycle/html/education.html
