Horry County's 2008 Recycling Rate was 30.7% (ranked #8 out of 46 counties in the state).   For Fiscal Year 2008, Horry County recycled 109,507 tons of material and disposed 247,651 tons of waste.

South Carolina's 2008 Recycling Rate was 24.4%.   For Fiscal Year 2008, South Carolina recycled 1,084,926 tons of material and disposed 3,367,422 tons of waste.

2008 Environmental Impact of Horry County
Horry County's recycling efforts resulted in an environmental impact equivalent to eliminating electricity usage by 43,624 households for one year; 2,297 acres of forest preserved from deforestation; or conserving 37,385,067 gallons of gasoline.

Economic Impact of Recycling
"The Economic Impact of the Recycling Industry in South Carolina" study, commissioned by DHEC and the S.C. Department of Commerce, shows that the recycling industry is directly responsible for more than 15,000 jobs, $1.5 billion in annual personal income and $69 million in tax revenue each year. Overall, the recycling industry has a $6.5 billion impact annually on the state's economy according to the study that was conducted by the College of Charleston's Department of Economics and Finance.
