Where does all the recycling go? - The MRF!
You may have asked yourself this question if you recycle in Horry County. After you place your recyclables into a recycling container, either at one of the Recycling Centers or through one of the municipal programs, the SWA receives it. The plastic bottles, aluminum and steel cans, glass jars, cardboard, newspaper, magazines and office paper are transported to a central Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). At the MRF, these materials are hand-sorted and packaged. The recyclables are then shipped to factories that turn them into new recycled-content products.
The current 40,000 square foot MRF is capable of processing 30,000 tons of recyclables annually. The state-of-the-art facility is a "Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" registered building. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.
